Default GW Randomly Switches Laptop to Powersave Mode

Hi all,

This is my first post on GW Guru. I noticed some topics on this forum with similar problems to mine and thought I would add the unusual behavior my computer is displaying to the mix.

After playing Guild Wars for a period of time (anywhere from 30 minutes to 2 hours or more), my laptop will switch itself to powersave mode. The screen backlight dims, and I get a framerate drop. I can usually get it to go back to normal by changing power settings when this happens, but it will always happen again if I keep playing.

This only happens with Guild Wars, no other game, and it happens without fail if I play for a long enough time. Here are the things I have done to try and fix the problem with no success:
- clean out vents, fans, etc.
- reinstall Guild Wars
- adjust graphics settings
- update video card drivers, audio drivers, etc.

Here are my specs:
Windows 7 64bit
Intel Core 2 Duo P8700 / 2.53 GHz
6GB # DDR2 SDRAM - 800 MHz
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 260M

Any ideas on what could be causing this or how to fix it? It doesn't make the game unplayable, but it sure is frustrating.

Thanks!

I haven't. I will try running it in compatibility mode when I get home tonight and report back. I've had such good luck running other games without using compatibility mode I didn't even think of it

Thanks!

Do you have a power management software other than the one that comes with windows (i.e. Power4Gear Hybrid, Toshiba energy management etc...). If you have one, try uninstalling that and running from the default windows configs.

Ok, I just tried compatibility mode and I played for about 2 hours before it happened again. There is an ASUS power manager utility (TurboGear I think) on the computer, I'll try uninstalling it and playing another session. Thanks!

I played for about an hour last night after uninstalling the ASUS power settings manager, and I didn't have any issues. I'll keep my fingers crossed! Thanks for your help.

Glad it seems to have fixed your problem, but it seems a bit strange. Never had any problems with P4G hybrid and GW on any of my asus laptops. You could try installing the latest version or simply stay with the windows power manager which is rather decent. Just make to stay on the highest performance option while gaming.

yeah, I always delete any and all boatware like that on a pre-installed system --- generally makes things much smoother and conflict free that way. glad it's working for ya!
